Virginia Men's Tennis | No. 3 Virginia Downs Notre Dame 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  – The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team (14-4, 6-0 ACC) closed out its weekend homestand with a 6-1 victory against Notre Dame  (9-8, 1-3 ACC) on Sunday (March 17) at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort.

The Cavaliers won all three doubles courts and took five singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles, senior Iñaki Montes and grad student James Hopper opened play with a dominant 6-2 victory against Sebastian Dominko and Jean-Marc Malkowski. Dominko and Malkowski are ranked No. 11 in the latest ITA doubles rankings. Senior Chris Rodesch and sophomore Doug Yaffa clinched the point with a 6-3 victory on court three. Freshman Dylan Dietrich and grad student Edorado Graziani came back from down a break to win 7-5 on court two to finish the doubles sweep.

In singles, senior Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and sophomore Måns Dahlberg logged 6-0, 6-2 wins on courts three and six to put UVA up 3-0. Rodesch clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Nil Giraldez at court two.

Montes added his second ranked win of the day, taking down Dominko 6-4, 6-2 on the top singles court. Dominko is ranked No. 34 in singles.

After Notre Dame picked up a straight-set victory on court four, senior Alex Kiefer closed out the contest with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory at five.

MATCH NOTES

  • Notre Dame is ranked No. 50 in the latest ITA team rankings
  • Måns Dahlberg is 5-0 in ACC matches
  • Chris Rodesch has won his last nine completed singles matches and is 6-0 in ACC play and 14-2 on the season
  • Iñaki Montes logged two victories this weekend against ranked singles players as he won 6-3, 6-4 against No. 33 Etienne Donnet of Louisville on Friday. Montes is currently ranked No. 38
  • Virginia has won 47 consecutive conference matches. Their last ACC loss was against Wake Forest on March 17, 2019
  • Virginia has not lost an outdoor match since falling in the Round of 16 of the 2021 NCAA Championship

 ON THE HORIZON

  • The Cavaliers play at Miami on Friday, March 22, at 10 a.m.
  • Virginia closes out the trip by playing at No. 13 Florida State on Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m.
