Gators Move to No. 16 in the Ranks

Florida secured a big win over Tennessee on Sunday afternoon due to a high level of singles play. With five victories from its top courts, the Gators have now moved to No. 16 in the national ranks.

GAINESVILLE, Fla.– Following a big win over Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, the Gators have climbed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings to No. 16.

Florida entered the weekend at No. 18 before putting up a fight against No. 10 Georgia, and coming out victorious over then-ranked No. 16 Tennessee.

Senior Sara Dahlstrom is the only Gator remaining who holds an undefeated 3-0 record in SEC singles play. Dahlstrom plays a vital part in the Gators’ success and most recently clinched the match for Florida against the Vols with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory on court two.

In the doubles category, Florida has seen conference victories from freshman duo Malwina Rowinska and Qavia Lopez; along with a 2-1 winning record from Carly Briggs and Rachel Gailis. This past weekend the Gators came up short in pursuit of the doubles point against Georgia and Tennessee, relying on their singles play to put them on the board.

Heading into another weekend of challenging matchups, Florida plans to make the necessary adjustments to claim the advantage early. Head Coach Roland Thornqvist commented, “In general we’ve been talking a lot about our doubles, play, and candidly, it’s suffered the last month. So that’s going to be something that over the next week we’ll be addressing.”

Since the beginning of March, Florida has improved three spots in the ITA Team Rankings and has had three top-ranked singles players: No. 45 Rachel Gailis, No. 79 Carly Briggs, and No. 80 Sara Dahlstrom. Updated singles and doubles rankings will be released on Mar. 19, with several Gators projected to move up in the ranks.
