Women’s Tennis Comeback Comeback Falls Short Against No. 17 California

TEMPE, Ariz.-  In the weekend finale of their Pac-12 opening series against the Bay Area schools, No. 30 Arizona State (7-5, 0-1 Pac-12) came back  against No. 17 California (6-2, 1-0 Pac-12) but fell short 4-3.
 
ASU led Cal 1-0 after taking the best-of-three opening doubles match. Partners sophomore Chelsea Fontenel and junior Patricija Spaka tallied the first win, 6-2, on court one. After Cal’s court two victory, the decisive match came down to court three. Senior Marianna Argyrokastriti and freshman Emilija Tverijonaite broke their opponents serve in the final game, winning 7-5 to give the Sun Devils the doubles point.
 
In singles, the Sun Devils knocked off two highly ranked opponents. Tverijonaite pulled off the upset 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) on court three, clinching the match in a tiebreak. Freshman Sara Svetac won her back-and-forth, three-set match, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) on court four. After dropping the first set, she rallied to take the final two sets and pulled away in the tiebreak. The Bears got wins on courts 1,2,5 and 6 to clinch the match.
