MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men’s tennis team (0-3, 0-0 B1G) is set to host Old Dominion (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) in its second-consecutive week of tennis in Madison on Friday, Jan. 26. The match will commence at 5:30 p.m. and will be played inside Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Here are five things you should know before Wisconsin hosts Old Dominion:
1. SCOUTING THE MONARCHS: The Old Dominion Monarchs are 2-0 to begin their season, after securing back-to-back 7-0 victories against Temple and Howard on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Monarchs have two nationally ranked doubles pairs in the ITA Preseason polls, with Codie van Schalkwyk and Connor van Schalkwyk ranked at No. 6, while Jakob Cadonau and Cosme Rolland De Ravel are No. 33. Last season, 70th-ranked Old Dominion captured the Sun Belt Conference title over 63rd-ranked South Alabama, the team’s first title since 2018. This win solidified the Monarchs’ place in the NCAA Tournament, where they eventually lost to No. 17 Utah, 1-4, in the first round.
2. BADGERS SEEKING REVENGE: The Badgers and Monarchs last battled on Jan. 29, 2023 in Norfolk, Virginia, and ended with Old Dominion slightly edging out Wisconsin, 4-3. Wisconsin began by displaying its doubles dominance, with wins from Gabriel Huber/Michael Minasyan and Jason Hildebrandt/Jared Pratt to secure the Badgers’ fourth-straight doubles point of the season. Michael Minasyan won at No. 5 singles in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), followed by Sebastian Vile in the No. 4 singles match (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) to put the Badgers up 3-1 early on. However, the Monarchs battled back and won the remaining three singles matches to take the team victory.
3. LAST SERVE: In the Badgers’ last time out on the court against Notre Dame on Jan. 21, the team fell 5-2 to wrap up its first weekend in Nielsen. Once again, five of the six Wisconsin players were underclassmen, including four freshmen. Sophomore Michael Minasyan secured a victory against Nil Giraldez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, claiming his second singles victory of the weekend. Collin Beduhn also chimed in a point, defeating Jameson Corsillo, 6-4, 6-1 and winning the first singles match of his young career with the Badgers.
