CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech’s Andres Martin and Virginia’s Chris Rodesch were named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Co-Players of the Week, while Rodesch and his partner Jeffrey von der Schulenburg were tabbed the Doubles Team of the Week. Louisville’s Miguel Avendaño earned Freshman of the Week honors.
Martin went 4-0 at the No. 1 singles position as Georgia Tech, posting four-straight wins in an undefeated week, featuring a 6-3, 7-5, win over Alabama’s No. 35 Filip Planinsek. He also recorded a 4-0 week on the doubles court to help push the Yellow Jackets to a 5-0 overall record.
Rodesch, ranked No. 22 in the country, defeated No. 1 Eliot Spizzirri, 6-3, 6-3, as top-ranked Virginia took down No. 3 Texas, 4-3, on the road. The Angelsburg, Luxembourg, native fell later in the week in three sets, as No. 5 South Carolina upset the Cavaliers.
Rodesch and von der Schulenburg helped No. 1 Virginia claim the doubles point in both of the team’s top five matchups over the week, with a 6-4 win against No. 3 Texas and a 6-1 win against No. 5 South Carolina on Court 2.
Avendaño helped Louisville stay undefeated, taking the doubles point all three of the Cardinals’ matches against Xavier, Bellarmine and Northwestern, including in Sunday’s match against the Wildcats where the doubles point came down to his court. The Madrid, Spain, native battled back with Andre’ Steinbach to win the match 7-5 after trailing 3-1. In the Cardinals’ match against Xavier to open the season, Avendaño also scored the clinching singles point to win the match from Court No. 6.
