#6 Vols Down #15 Wake Forest, 5-2


KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The sixth-ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team took down its second top-15 opponent of the weekend, defeating No. 15 Wake Forest, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
 
No. 33 Shunsuke Mitsui delivered the clinching point for the Vols, defeating No. 54 DK Suresh, 7-6(4), 6-4, to record his third victory over a ranked opponent in 2023-24.
 
Tennessee (5-0) won the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match on courts two and three. The 34th-ranked pairing of Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka defeated Luciano Tacchi and Luca Pow of Wake Forest (2-1), 6-3, at No. 2 doubles, winning 73 percent of their total serve points. On court three, Younes Lalami and Filip Apltauer clinched the doubles point by taking down the Demon Deacons’ Filippo Moroni and Matthew Thomson in a 6-4 effort to give the Vols a 1-0 advantage. The 26th-ranked duo of Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz was up 4-4 on court one before going unfinished.
 
Monday, ranked 20th in singles, was the first to finish in singles competition, routing No. 7 Filippo Moroni, 6-3, 6-4, posting back-to-back victories over top-10 ranked opponents atop the lineup. Diaz followed on court six, battling to take down Luca Pow, 7-6(1), 6-2. After Mitsui’s clinching effort at the No. 2 spot, Pieczonka logged a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Holden Koons, winning 74 percent of his second serve points. Wake Forest added two points to the score with wins on courts five and three.
 
UNDEFEATED IN SINGLES
Johannus Monday, Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka are all undefeated in singles competition through UT’s first five matches of the 2024 dual match season. 
 
VOLS DOMINANT OVER THE DEMON DEACONS
With today’s 5-2 victory, the Vols now hold a 14-6 advantage over Wake Forest, winning three out of the last four meetings.

TENNESSEE VS. RANKED OPPONENTS

The Vols’ 5-2 win over No. 15 Wake Forest marked their second victory over a ranked opponent this season and their ninth since the start of the 2023 dual match season.

Tennessee will compete in the 2024 ITA Kickoff Weekend, serving as a host of the event. Play for the Vols begins with South Florida on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 12 p.m. ET in Goodfriend Tennis Center and continues Sunday, Jan. 28 against either Washington or Oklahoma.
