Men’s Tennis Earns Pair of Wins in Friday’s Opener

TEMPE – In the 2024 season opener, Sun Devil men’s tennis (2-0) defeated both Northern Arizona (0-1) and Wichita State (1-2) via a pair of 4-0 victories Friday at Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe. 

Head Coach Matt Hill praised his team’s performance, “The guys really took care of the fundamentals and the details. It was cold out here and not easy… they managed their matches really, really well.”

ASU opened their match against NAU by earning the doubles point with victories on courts one and three, taking a 1-0 match lead. 2023 NCAA Semifinalist Murphy Cassone made quick work of his match on court one, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Max McKennon followed suit, winning on court two in a similar fashion, 6-2, 6-2 to lead the match 3-0. Jacob Bullard closed up the match for the Sun Devils in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 to move ASU to 1-0.

Similarly, ASU earned the doubles point against Wichita State after wins on court one and two. Freshman Bor Artnak won by injury retirement while Mckennon and freshman Martin Vergara Del Puerto earned the other two singles points for the team to secure the 4-0 victory.
