Tennis Signs Incoming Freshman Karina Jumazhanova

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers women’s tennis head coach Hilary Ritchie announced the signing of Karina Jumazhanova on Thursday afternoon. Jumazhanova, a native of Almaty, Kazakhstan, will join the team as a freshman in the fall of 2023.

“Karina is going to be a terrific addition to our team,” said Ritchie. “She has a lot of experience playing at a high level. Karina is a great competitor with a solid baseline game. I am looking forward to coaching Karina because of her talent and her infectious optimism.”

Jumazhanova mainly competes in Women’s 15k events on the ITF World Tennis Tour, reaching a career-high ITF ranking of 178.

Following her arrival ‘On The Banks’, Jumazhanova plans to study both psychology and sport management.

“I chose to commit to Rutgers, as it offers a great opportunity to balance playing tennis at a Division I level while pursuing my career interests in psychology and sport management,” said Jumazhanova. “Rutgers’ tennis team, specifically, with Hilary Ritchie as a head coach is an amazing community that helps its members develop themselves as both athletes and individuals, which is something I aspire to do.”

Jumazhanova resides in Almaty with her father, Timur, and mother, Aigul. She also has one brother, Rustam.

Currently, Jumazhanova attends Inzhu high school in Taraz, Kazakhstan.

“Overall, I believe Rutgers is a perfect place for me to grow and learn,” Jumazhanova concluded.
