Spartan Women’s Tennis Ends Fall with Successful Spartan Invite


EAST LANSING, Mich.— Michigan State women’s tennis wrapped up their fall season on a high note as they hosted the three-day Spartan Invite in East Lansing on Sunday, Oct. 5.
 
DAY ONE RECAP
The Spartans kicked off the strong weekend winning four out of the five doubles matches against Butler University. The duos of Marley Lambert/Natalie Stasny displayed an impressive performance winning in a tight 7-6 (12-10) battle. The pairings of Makenna Martinez/Matilde Morias, Ria Bhakta/Marlo Schiffman, and Nicole Conrad/Sarah Fazlagic all posted victories. MSU was swept by DePaul in doubles play on the day.
 
Singles play was highlighted Ria Bhakta who had a commanding victory Gonzaga sweeping her match, 6-1, 6-0. Issey Purser, Stasny, Conrad, Lambert, and Bhakta each recorded victories to close out day one.
 
DAY TWO RECAP
Saturday opened with more doubles play that saw the Green and White winning three out of four over Gonzaga that featured a 6-0 sweep by the duo of Purser/Conard. The tandems of Bhakta/Lambert and Stasny/Martinez were also victorious. Issey Vehvilainen/Morias dropped their matchup in a close 6-4 final.
 
The Spartans were able to bounce back from Friday’s sweep from DePaul in their singles play with MSU winning six out of seven matches. Vehvilainen recovered from dropping the first set and rattled off two-straight, 6-3, 6-4. Purser, Stasny, Lambert, Bhakta, and Conard all registered singles victories.
 
DAY THREE RECAP
The Spartan invite closed out with the Spartans having yet another impressive performance winning six of their last seven matches. Vehvilainen, Purser, Stasny, Bhakta, Conard, and Schiffman all ended their fall season with victories. The day was highlighted by Purser winning in three sets 6-3, 4-6, and 7-5. Conard showed an impressive performance sweeping in two sets 6-0 and 6-1.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans will they travel out west to Tuscon, AZ to open the spring season for a trio of duals against Brigham Young University, University of Missouri, and the University of Arizona on Jan. 19-20.
