SAN DIEGO – University of Utah women’s tennis team will be represented by sophomore Marcela Lopez at the ITA Nationals Championships. The tournament will take place from Nov. 1-5, 2023 at the Barnes Tennis center in San Diego, Calif.

FIRST SERVE
Lopez’s first match will be Wednesday, Nov. 1. Draws and match times are still to be determined.
LOPEZ BREAKDOWN
After finding success in the ITA Regionals, Lopez earned a spot as one of 32 selected to compete for a singles national title. She currently holds a 6-2 overall singles record in the fall season.
LAST TIME OUT
During her initial season as a Ute in 2022-23 Lopez accumulated a singles record of 15-5 and went 5-4 in the Pac-12. Accomplishing an 11 match winning streak during the season, she ended the season at No. 13 in the ITA Mountain Region singles rankings and was named ITA Mountain Region Freshman of the Year.
Lopez made her last appearance in the ITA Regionals Wednesday, Oct. 18 – Sunday Oct. 22, competing at a high level throughout the tournament. She made a run to the finals in the singles main draw, by beating out No. 1 seed from BYU Yujia Huang, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 in the semifinals. Lopez battled for a regional title but fell just short in the finals, concluding the match 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is entering his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women’s tennis program in 2023-24. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 45-41 overall record. During the 2022-23 season, Mortera had the Utes reaching new heights. He led the Utes to a 13-11 record and a first place ranking in the ITA Mountain Region. Mortera assisted the Utes in securing their first-ever victory over Cal, as well as defeating No. 16 Washington, the highest ranked win in the Pac-12 era.
