TULSA, Okla. – Duke wrapped up its time at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Friday.
No. 18 sophomore Pedro Rodenas fell in his third match at the tournament to No. 8 Inako Montes de la Torre of Virginia. Rodenas’ familiar ACC foe claimed a 6-3 victory in the opening set but the Madrid, Spain, native rebounded for a 7-6 (4) tiebreak win in the second frame to force a decisive third set. Unfortunately, Montes de la Torre registered a 6-1 victory to pull out the win and advance to the quarterfinals.
No. 10 Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang also concluded their time at the event on Friday when they dropped a three-set thriller to No. 31 Montes de la Torre and James Hopper of Virginia. Heller and Zhang fell in a 6-3 decision in their first set but responded with a 7-5 victory in the second frame. With the match coming down to the third and final frame, Montes de la Torre and Hopper were able to outlast the Blue Devils 10-7 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
