Alabama Sweeps Singles on Day Two of Four-In-The-Fall Tournament


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –– A strong performance in singles advanced both Alabama men’s tennis pairings to the finals at the Four-In-The-Fall.

All four UA tennis players recorded wins in singles play as Matias Ponce De Leon and Andrii Zimnokh captured two set victories, while Yair Sarouk and Roan Jones took their matches in three sets.

Each program has four players competing in pairs throughout the tournament. Each pair will play a total of three matches each round, one doubles and two singles. The duo that wins two of the three matches will advance in the compass draw.

The Competition

  • Ponce De Leon was the first competitor of the day to win in singles, dropping a combined two games for a 6-0, 6-2 win against Shu Matsuoka (MTSU Blue)
  • Zimnokh defeated Sam Scherer (Tulane Blue) 6-1, 6-3 to record a win for Alabama White
  • Sarouk split his opening two sets, 6-4, 1-6, before winning the final round against Alec Gaudin, 7-5
  • Jones captured the final victory of the day, battling to take a three-set win over Karim Al-Amin
  • Jones dropped the opening round 5-7, before going 6-3, 7-5 to advance Alabama Crimson to the finals
