Blue Devils Shine During Summer Competition


DURHAM – Duke men’s tennis has been active on the summer circuit, as three Blue Devils competed in events last week on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) world tennis tour.
 
Senior Garrett Johns teamed up with Ozan Baris from Michigan State to win the 25K Futures event in Wichita, Kan. The pair defeated Aidan Kim and Bruno Kuzuhara of the United States 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 in their opening round before cruising to three more victories to claim the title. The duo bested Cannon Kingsley of the United States and James Kent Trotter of Japan in the finals 7-6 (4), 6-3.
 
In addition, Johns competed in the singles event at the Wichita Tennis Open, defeating top-seed and No. 231 ATP Tennys Sandgren 6-0, 6-2 in the first round before falling to Kuzuhara in the second round 6-4, 7-6 (8). 
 
Rookie Pedro Rodenas also put together an impressive showing at the men’s singles 15K Futures event in Rabat, Morocco. The Madrid, Spain, native advanced to the finals match but ultimately fell to No. 2 seed and No. 319 ATP Royer Valentin of France in a three-set thriller 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
 
Rodenas claimed 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3) tiebreak victories in his opening round before garnering wins over Lucio Carnevalle of Argentina, Gerard Planelles Ripoll of Spain and Walid Ahouda of Morocco to advance to the title match.

Rodenas also competed in the dobules portion of the event, winning his opening round match before falling in the quarterfinals.

 

Additionally, sophomore Jake Krug participated in his first professional event of the summer, joining Johns at the 25K Futures event in Wichita, Kan. In his opening round of the qualifying tournament, Krug battled Tommaso Carnevale-Miino of Italy and recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Unfortunately, during the final round of the qualifying draw, he dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to top-seed Mac Kiger of the United States.
