Yuta Kikuchi Named To NCAA Singles Field

BERKELEY – The California men’s tennis team made more postseason news when Yuta Kikuchi earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Singles Championship, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.

The Golden Bear graduate student is one of 64 student-athletes in the field, which will compete from May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The USTA courts will also host the NCAA Championship quarterfinals, semifinals and final from May 18-20.

Kikuchi is ranked 28th in the most recent ITA singles poll and has a record of 16-8, including a 12-6 record on court one. The Yahaba, Japan, product has won seven of his last nine matches.

This marks Kikuchi’s first trip to the postseason singles tournament, though he has competed twice in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Last season, Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck reached the NCAA round of 16 in Illinois, and as a freshman in 2019, Kikuchi and Jacob Brumm advanced to the doubles round of 16 in Orlando.

Kikuchi and the Golden Bears will start the NCAA Championship on Saturday at 10 a.m. EDT/7 a.m. PDT, when they play Louisiana State in the first round in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
