Utah gets big 4-3 win over Arizona

The University of Utah’s men’s tennis team picked up a big 4-3 win over Arizona Friday afternoon. 

The match started off with the Utes getting the doubles point. In the No. 2 spot the Utah duo, Geronimo Espin Busleiman and Franco Calpabo defeated Colton Smith and Nick Lagaev 6-3. Bruno Caula and Francisco Bastias defeated Herman Hoeyeraal 6-4 to give Utah the much needed doubles point advantage. 

Arizona picked up singles wins in the No. 5, No 3, and No. 2 spots before Utah was able to get a singles win. 

With the score at 3-1, Patrik Trhac picked up a 3-6, 6-3 7-6 (7-3) win over Dominique Rolland in the No. 6 spot. Utah’s Caula picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win in the No. 4 spot over Lagaev to tie the match at 3-3. 

For the clinch, Utah’s Calpabo picked up a big win at the No. 1 spot. He defeated #57 Smith in a tiebreak three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) to give Utah the overall match win 4-3. 

Utah is now 19-3 on the season and now sit at No. 1 in the Pac-12. 

UP NEXT

The Utes will host Arizona State in the final home match of the season for senior day Sunday, April 16 at 2 p.m. in the Eccles Tennis Center.
