DURHAM – The third-ranked Duke women’s tennis team closed the regular season on Friday on the road at top-ranked North Carolina with a 4-1 loss at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The match opened outside as the Tar Heels dedicated their new stadium prior to the match with an impressive crowd, but inclement weather moved the contest indoors. With the loss, Duke dropped to 22-3 overall and 11-2 in the ACC, while North Carolina improved to 27-0, 13-0.
The Blue Devils have now clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ACC Championship and will open play on Friday, April 19 in Cary, N.C.
How It Happened
• Duke jumped out to a good start on court three with Georgia Drummy and Iuliia Bryzgalova taking a 6-2 victory over Elizabeth Scotty and Sophia Patel.
• North Carolina’s No. 4 ranked Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig were able to register a 6-1 win on court one over Duke’s No. 48 Cameron Morra and Chloe Beck.
• It all came down to court two with North Carolina’s Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran versus No. 59 Karolina Berankova and Emma Jackson. The Blue Devils fell behind, 2-1, but were able to even the match 2-2. With UNC leading, 3-2, the match was moved indoors.
