BERKELEY, Calif. – The UCLA men’s tennis team suffered a 4-0 conference loss versus California Friday afternoon at Hellman Tennis Complex. Originally scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. PT, the match was delayed three times due to rain before starting three hours later.
The Bruins dropped to 9-6 (1-2 Pac-12) with the loss. Yuta Kikuchi clinched the overall win for the Golden Bears (10-7, 2-2). Also victorious for Cal on the singles courts were Carl Emil Overbeck and Philip Hjorth.
Overbeck and Siddhant Banthia got doubles play underway with a 6-1 top-court win against Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli. Each of the remaining matches reached 5-5, with the Court 2 matchup ultimately left unfinished while in a tiebreaker. The Golden Bears sealed the doubles point in their favor when Hjorth and Kikuchi outlasted Jeffrey Fradkin and Aadarsh Tripathi 7-5.
Each singles first set went the way of Cal. Overbeck and Hjorth collected near-simultaneous victories on Courts 3 and 5, respectively. Overbeck got the better of Tripathi in a 6-1, 6-3 decision, while Hjorth bested Ballotta 6-1, 6-2.
The match was decided on Court 1, where No. 37 Kikuchi defeated Zahraj 6-4, 6-2.
UCLA completes its Northern California road trip Saturday, when it visits Taube Family Tennis Center and No. 24 Stanford. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
