TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 29 USC women’s tennis team struggled to get going against No. 30 Arizona State, falling 4-1 at the Whiteman Tennis Center. With the loss, USC drops to 13-7 on the season and 5-3 in Pac-12 play.
Arizona State secured an early lead following their victories in doubles. Grace Piper and Naomi Cheong lost 6-2 on court two to the Sun Devils’ Sedona Gallagher and Giulia Morlet, while No. 21 Maddy Sieg and Eryn Cayetno were defeated 7-5 on court one by No. 27 Domenika Turkovic and Patricija Spaka. Nathalie Rodilosso and Emma Charney secured the Trojans’ lone doubles victory with a 6-4 win over Marianna Argyrokastriti and Chelsea Fontenel.
The Trojans were unable to bounce back as the match entered singles play. McKenna Koenig was defeated 6-2, 6-4 on court five by Gallagher, while No. 42 Cayetano fell 6-2, 7-5 on court two to Fontenel. A 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory for ASU’s Argyrokastriti over Cheong on court four sealed the win for the Sun Devils.
Emma Charney scored the Trojans’ lone point of the match, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Turkovic on court three. Play was suspended on courts one and six; both were paused in their third sets.
The Trojans will look to bounce back tomorrow when they take on Pac-12 rival No. 45 Arizona on the road. The match will start at 12 p.m.
