WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After dropping consecutive road matches last weekend, the 19th-ranked Wake Forest men’s tennis team will return home to host defending national champion No. 8 Virginia (Friday, April 7) and No. 73 Virginia Tech (Sunday, April 9) this weekend at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Prior to last weekend’s pair of narrow losses, the Demon Deacons (21-8, 5-3 ACC) were on a six-match winning streak where they were out-scoring their opponents 28-4.
Sunday’s match against the 73rd-ranked Hokies will serve as Senior Day as Melios Eftstahiou, Jurabek Karimov and Juan Lopez de Azcona will be recognized for their contributions to the Wake Forest men’s tennis program.
This week, Efstathiou moved up to fifth in the ITA Singles Rankings after consecutive top-50 dual singles victories against Duke and North Carolina. The Limassol, Cyprus native owns a 16-3 dual singles record this season and has won eight of his last nine matches.
With four matches remaining, the Demon Deacons are in position to potentially host a regional in the NCAA Tournament as they are ranked 19th nationally. Currently, the Deacs are ranked sixth in the ACC but sit only one match out of fourth. Of note, the top four seeds in the league receive a double-bye in the ACC Tournament.
