Winning Streak Snapped by Bulldogs, 4-3

EUGENE, Ore. – Fresno State, the defending Mountain West Conference champion, needed a third-set tie breaker in the final singles’ match of the day to overcome Oregon, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
 
The Ducks (6-3), after dropping the doubles point for the first time over its last five matches, recovered to win three singles matches to even the score at 3-3. The lone match remaining was on court three, where UO’s Karin Young and the Bulldogs’ Cristina Flaquer were tied, 6-6, and headed to a match-deciding tiebreak.
 
Young trailed 5-2 in that third-set tiebreaker and later staved off match point at 6-4 before ultimately falling 7-5. Three of the six singles matches went a full three sets, with Fresno State (4-5) earning two victories.
 
The first three courts all went the distance, including Ares Teixido Garcia’s 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at No. 2 that evened the score at 3-3. Teixido Garcia pushed her winning streak to five straight and boasts a 7-2 spring record.
 
Jo-Yee Chan and Uxia Martinez Moral also extended their singles winning streaks to five in a row. Chan, a freshman, defeated Mariia Vyshkina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, and Martinez Moral got past Carolina Piferi, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Chan is 6-1 in her first collegiate season and Martinez Moral, a junior, is 7-1.
 
On the doubles’ side, Chan and Teixido Garcia remained unbeaten with a 6-0 blanking of Meshkatolzahra Safi and Vushkina. The pair is 7-0 this spring.
