CHICAGO, Ill. – The Illinois men’s tennis team will begin the ITA National Indoor Tournament against No. 1 Ohio State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at XS Tennis Village in Chicago, Ill. 

The Illini are looking for a bounce back match against No. 1 Ohio State after losing to the Buckeyes, 6-1, earlier in the year. 

Illinois is coming off a big win against No. 13 Georgia Wednesday night at XS Village in Chicago, Ill. The 4-2 victory was the first ranked win for the Illini this season and their third straight win.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION | Ohio State (12-0)

Ty Tucker, who became the head coach of the Ohio State men’s tennis program in 1999, has turned Buckeye tennis into an elite program that has maintained consistent success, shattered program records and contended for Big Ten and national titles year after year

Tucker has guided the Scarlet and Gray to 16 consecutive Big Ten regular-season titles (2006–22) and 13 B1G Tournament crowns, Tucker also has coached the program to 12 seasons of 30 or more wins.

Ohio State is coming off a 4-0 win over No. 10 Baylor at home on Feb. 14. This is the best start the Buckeyes have had since 2020 where they started the season 13-0. 

Illinois Men’s Tennis Take Down No. 13 Georgia

Mathis Debru and Oliver Okonkwo were the first doubles pair to finish, losing to No. 24 pair Trent Boyle and Ethan Quinn, 6-2. 

Karlis Ozolins and Hunter Heck turned it around, defeating Teodor Guisca and Philip Henning, 6-2. 

Already in a close match, Lucas Horve and Gabrielius Guzauskas fought for not only the win, but the team doubles point. The duo ended up beating Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston on a tie break of 7-6 (5) to put the Illini in the lead. 

Georgia was out for blood going into singles play with No. 8 Henning quickly defeating Heck, 6-3, 6-0. Okonkwo was the next to finish with a loss to Croyder, 6-2, 7-5. 

The Illini went on to win three singles matches in-a-row, starting with Ozolins beating No. 5 Ethan Quinn, 6-4, 6-3. Kenta Miyoshi was close behind him, grabbing a 6-2, 6-4…
