SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men’s tennis team finished off the week with a match against the New Mexico Lobos. The squad secured the doubles point swiftly, and moved onto singles play where competition got intense for final score 4-3.
During doubles play, the Utes started off strong. On court one, the No. 17-ranked duo consisting of Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac downed Lobos Alex Maggs and Jan Pucalka 6-1. Shortly following, Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula took the upper hand against their competitors on court three, also finishing 6-1 and securing the doubles point for the Utes. On court two, Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman led 5-2, but their match was unfinished.
As the match moved to singles, the Utes were ready to take on the Lobos. On court five, Trhac cruised through his match against Ryoma Matsushita, finishing 6-1, 6-1 and awarding the Utes with their second point. The third point came on court two, where Capalbo defeated Rafael Abdulsalam 6-1, 6-2.
The deciding point came on court one, where No. 37-ranked Espin Busleiman donwed Arda Azkara in a 6-1, 6-4 match. The rest of the matches played out. On court four, Caula marched into a third set, but dropped his match 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. On court six, Bugarikj also went into a third set, awarding the Lobos with their second point after dropping the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
