NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team defeated Louisville 6-1 in its home opener Friday, improving to 4-0 on the season.
“Overall, really happy with the team’s performance today against Louisville in our first home match of the spring. I thought we competed really well in both doubles and singles,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “Louisville is a talented team, and I think we showed some grit and some disciple that allowed us to pull through some competitive matches today.”
No. 55 Celia-Belle Mohr and Anessa Lee won the first doubles match, putting their team in a position to clinch the doubles point. Anna Ross and Holly Staff won their match, extending their doubles team win streak to three and earning the doubles point for the Dores.
In singles, Lee swept Louisville’s Maria Campos in both sets, extending her win streak to eight. Bridget Stammel showed her resilience, battling to win her first set and then sweeping Jamilah Snells in the second set to bring the Dores within one. Mohr clinched the match for the Dores with her court one win over Andrea Di Palma.
The Dores finished out the rest of the singles matches with wins from Staff and Amy Stevens.
“It was also really nice to play in front of a big home crowd, and we appreciate all of the support that we had for the team today,” Tsoubanos said. “We hope to see everyone out for the next home match against Central Florida in two weeks. Now, we will look to rest and regroup and then turn our focus to some great competition coming up in Seattle.”
