Alabama Men’s Tennis Blanks Michigan State, 7-0


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men’s tennis team captured a 7-0 win over Michigan State Saturday to move to 5-0 on the season. The Spartans dropped to 2-3 on the year with the loss.

The win was Alabama’s second consecutive 7-0 victory, adding to a 7-0 win against Chattanooga on Jan. 22. The Tide’s 5-0 record is the program’s best start to a season 2019.

The Match

  • After falling behind with a loss on court three, Alabama found back-to-back wins on courts two and one, respectively, to take the first point of the match
  • German Samofalov and Yair Sarouk jumped out of a 4-4 tie to take a 6-4 win over Graydon Lair and Luke Baylis on court two
  • After trailing 5-4, Filip Planinsek and Enzo Aguiard rallied to force a 6-6 tie against Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon at the top of the order
  • The UA duo rallied to take a dominant 7-1 victory in the tiebreaker and give the Tide the doubles point
  • Matias Ponce De Leon secured the Tide’s first singles win, going 6-2, 6-4 against Lair on court four before No. 96 Roan Jones posted a 7-6(6), 6-1 win on court three for a 3-0 UA lead
  • Samofalov went 6-2, 7-5 against Luke Baylis at No. 5 to record the deciding point
  • Alabama would add three-set victories on courts, six, two and one, respectively, to shut out the Spartans  
  • Sarouk recorded a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 win against David Saye on court six, No. 35 Aguiard recorded a 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 win against Sheldon on court two and Planinsek recorded a 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 win against No. 26 Baris
