Tech opens season with a sweep, beats Queens

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s tennis started the 2022-23 season with a bang sweeping Queens 7-0 this afternoon inside Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Dominant is the word that described the Hokies play on Friday afternoon with four singles matches ending in straight sets.

In doubles, Semra Aksu and Tamara Barad Itzhaki made quick work of their Monarch challengers dispatching them in a 6-2 match followed by a 6-3 win on court two from Sabina Richtrova and Erika Cheng to claim the doubles point for Tech.

Junior Kate Andreini set the tone early with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win against ODU’s Kelsey Sinclaire to get the ball rolling for the Hokies. Semra Aksu continued the momentum with a 6-1, 6-3 thrashing on court four to pick up her first win of the season. Erika Cheng followed suit with a straight set victory of her own to give the Hokies a 1-0 start to the season.

In an impressive effort on court two, freshman Özlem Uslu grinded back after dropping the second set to win the match in three sets and pick up her first singles win of her career, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. In fitting fashion, Dariya Radulova completed the sweep for the Hokies with a gritty 10-5 win in the third set tiebreak to put a bow on a flawless match.
