Women’s tennis falls 4-0 to Charlotte

Maryland or North Carolina

The University of Utah Women’s tennis finished their first day at the ITA kickoff in Chapel Hill, NC. Utah took on the Charlotte 49’ers and fell 4-0.

“Disappointing to lose while having three matches left in the third set,” said head coach Ric Mortera. “We have a lot of growing to do and I believe if we keep taking care of the things we need to then today will be something that will prove beneficial to us in the long term. We are going to keep working to get us to the level we expect of ourselves. We are looking forward to another opportunity to compete tomorrow.”

The Utes started the afternoon off dropping the doubles point. Katya Hersh and Marcela Lopez took on Charlotte players, Emma Wilkins and Lucie Petruzelova, and were defeated, 6-2. Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova teamed up against #21 in the ITA rankings, Lucia Quiterio and Margaux Maquet, and lost 6-4. Samantha Horwood and Katya Townsend’s match against Kaavya Sawhney and Ruxi Schech was left unfinished.

Horwood finished first in singles against Sawhney and was defeated, 6-1, 6-2. Goncharova lost to Petruzelova, 6-3,6-3. Tattini lost her first set to Maquet, 6-4. She was able to comeback and take the second set to tiebreakers where she was ultimately defeated, 7(7)-6(2). All other matches were left unfinished in the third set.
