As the 2022 calendar year comes to a close, Virginia Tech Athletics will spend the month of December celebrating the Hokies’ standout achievements from the past 12 months in a campaign called “Moments of Excellence.”

The “Moments of Excellence” campaign will serve as a look back to the historic highlights and memorable accomplishments in Tech Athletics during 2022. Each varsity sport program will have an outstanding moment featured during December on the official Virginia Tech Athletics website and @HokieSports social media properties. Fans can visit the Hokies’ social media directory to stay in contact with Tech Athletics and their favorite sports teams.

Virginia Tech women’s tennis defeated No. 67 Syracuse in dramatic fashion to earn their first ACC win serving as the women’s tennis Moment of Excellence.

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team displayed tremendous resolve in their ACC opener, as the Hokies defeated No. 67 Syracuse, 4-3, to start 1-0 in conference play. Elizabet Danailova sealed the deal for Hokies behind a dramatic third set, rallying from a 2-5 deficit to win the match.

 

Katie Andreini picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win but the Hokies found themselves in 3-1 hole after dropping the doubles point and a couple of singles matches. 

Tech continued to battle back with a string of hard-fought matches including Dariya Radulova on Court 3. She trailed 2-5 in the first set before charging ahead to notch a 7-6 tiebreak victory followed by a dominant 6-2 performance in the second set to earn another singles point for the Hokies. 

 

Virginia Tech desperately needed one more singles point to set up the game-decidng match. Erika Cheng and Syracuse’s Shiori Ito traded blows on Court 5 with Cheng proving to be too much for the Orange, winning 7-5, 7-5 turning the focus to Court 2.
