Tennessee Tennis Signs Aussie James Newton to 2023 Class

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – James Newton has signed with the Tennessee men’s tennis team and will join the Vols for the 2023-24 campaign, head coach Chris Woodruff announced Thursday.

Newton, a native of Perth, Australia, joins the Vol tennis squad as a freshman in the fall of 2023, marking the 37th consecutive season that an Australian has been on UT’s roster.

“I think James is going to thrive at Tennessee,” associate head coach James McKie said. “He’s a great person, natural leader and works extremely hard on the court and with his studies. He has many tools on the tennis court, which I know as coaches, we can develop and improve. James finishes high school in Perth next month and will focus solely on tennis until he arrives next summer. We’re looking forward to following his success over the next six months. His athleticism is evident through the several sports he played during his time at Christ Church Grammar School.”

With a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 11.54, Newton owns a top-10 UTR among U18 competitors in Australia. He is a two-time doubles finalist, reached a doubles semifinal at the Junior ITF level and logged a finals appearance at the U14 singles grass court nationals.

An attendee at Christ Church Grammar School and captain of the Tennis First Team in Australia, Newton helped lead the team to the U18 Western Australia championship and was later selected for the All-Australian U18 team.
