DENVER- The University of Colorado women’s tennis team played an abbreviated exhibition dual against Air Force in the second day of the Colorado Cup, splitting the doubles results and dropping three of four singles matches.
The Buffaloes technically would have won the dual 4-3 if Air Force had to forfeit the two singles matches and the third doubles match.
Mila Stanojevic had an outstanding bounce-back day, picking up her singles win against Courtney Swift in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, while also defeating Swift and teammate Andrea Le alongside Elys Ventura 6-4.
The other doubles match against Air Force had Alexis Odom and Sydney Fitch defeating Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed 6-3, while Ellen Puzak and Anya Nelson defeated a pair of CSU opponents in a tiebreaker 7-6(4).
In other singles play, the Buffs fell in four matches, three against Air Force. Fitch took down El Sayed in a tough three-set match that had El Sayed taking the first set 6-2 before falling 6-4 in the second. The two played a prostyle tiebreak third set that went to extra points with Fitch ultimately winning 12-10. Ventura took on Odom in the No.2 singles, falling 6-4, 6-3, while Carri Hayes toughed out an injury but fell 6-0, 6-1 to Le. Nelson took on a CSU opponent in added matches, falling to Luana Avelar 7-5, 6-2.
CSU swept Air Force yesterday afternoon in the cup before falling to Denver today 5-2. The Buffaloes close out the Colorado Cup and the fall season tomorrow morning when they take on Colorado State at 9 a.m. as the two battle for second in the cup standings.
