RALEIGH Rafael Izquierdo Luque and Joseph Wayand were paired together for the first time during the ITA regionals in Cary last week.
The duo turned out to be a pleasant surprise for head coach Kyle Spencer as they went on to win the regional. Now the two will compete at the ITA National Fall Championships, Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
“They gelled quite nicely at the regional,” Spencer said Tuesday morning. “They have a very similar personality on the court. Both guys serve effectively and return effectively. I think those will be the keys to producing good performances.”
Izquierdo Luque and Wayand will take on Berk Bugarikj and Patrick Trhac of Utah at 2:30 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday.
The 32-team draw will be a best of three set format. The championships are single elimination.
The ITA fall championship is the highlight of the fall season, bringing together the top singles and doubles teams from the nation.
“They are obviously excited,” Spencer said. “Neither player has been here before, but they are very familiar with the competition. Rafa played No. 1 singles for us last year, he’s used to the high level of college tennis and Joe is relatively new, but as we saw in the regionals played very well and is going to adapt nicely.”
At the regional finals last week, Izquierdo Luque and Wayand defeated Filippo Moroni and Juan Lopez De Azcona from Wake Forest 6-4, 6-4.
Fans can watch all the action via a live stream for all rounds of competition that can be found on the ITA National Fall Championships event page. A full schedule of events for the Championships can also be found on the events page.
