COLUMBIA, S.C. – In its final tournament of the fall, the Washington women’s tennis team made sure it would see some different competition than the usual Northwest region opponents. The Huskies went all the way out to the University of South Carolina to take part in the Gamecock Shootout, a hidden dual style event. The Huskies started the weekend by racking up 11 victories today, including five singles wins over the host Gamecocks.

South Carolina ended the 2022 season ranked 28th nationally, and also in the field is SMU and Marshall. SMU was ranked 44th to end last spring. Today the Huskies played singles against South Carolina, and doubles against SMU and Marshall.

Against the Gamecocks in singles, Sarah-Maude Fortin, Hikaru Sato, Astrid Olsen, and Erika Matsuda all won in straight sets, and Melissa Sakar battled back to win a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 match over Gracie Mulville. Jennifer Kerr had the lone loss in singles play.

The Huskies won three of four doubles matches against the Thundering Herd, and then another three of four matches against the Mustangs. Against Marshall, the matches were eight game pro-sets, but against SMU the teams agreed to play sets to six games.

Fortin and Matsuda teamed together for a 2-0 day. Other teams were swapped between the rounds, but Astrid Olsen and Jennifer Kerr each went 2-0. Ashley Chang and Yolanda Lin had a 6-4 win over SMU and a close tiebreak loss to Marshall.

Saturday the Huskies will play singles against Marshall, and doubles against South Carolina.
