Welch, Labrador Start Strong at ITA Regionals


LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A trio of Boilermakers opened their season on Thursday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional for the Purdue men’s tennis team. Sebastian Welch Daniel Labrador provided stellar performances with wins in singles and doubles.

Daniel Labrador and Sebastian Welch got the Boilermakers rolling in the opening round of doubles. Playing a competitive match together for the first time, and Labrador’s first as a Boilermaker, the duo downed Mitchell Deames and Paul Want from Vanderbilt, 8-3. The Purdue pair will face East Tennessee State’s Thago Pernas and Peter Kalocsai on Friday morning.

Welch later needed every point to defeat Daniel Perez-Caraballo from Tennessee State in the opening singles round. The Purdue senior punched his ticket to the second round with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6) win. He will face Jeremie Casabon from Vanderbilt on Friday.

Labrador cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Juan Lombisano from East Tennessee State in the opening singles round. The Clemson transfer will face Siim Troost from Vanderbilt on Friday.

After an opening round defeat, freshman Mujtaba Ali-Khan is set to play Jonasz Dziopak from Tennessee State in the consolation bracket.
