BERKELEY – Golden Bears Mikey Wright and John Kim captured the doubles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, hosted by the California men’s tennis team, on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

The fourth-seeded duo had already qualified for the upcoming ITA Super Regional Championships by winning their Saturday semifinal match. The Bears topped off their run at the regional by defeating Nevada’s Loris Zisswiller and Satchel Benn, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7, in Sunday’s final.

“Incredible effort by Mikey Wright and John ‘Jimmy’ Kim,'” said Kris Kwinta, Cal’s Peter Wright Director of Men’s Tennis. “They battled through lots of downs and showed a lot of Bear energy, and energy is what doubles is all about. I’m proud of their effort this weekend, and I am looking forward to what they will do in two weeks!”

The super regional runs from Oct. 21-24 at Stanford.

Earlier in the day, Kim beat Santa Clara’s Mann Shah, 6-1, 6-1, in an extra singles match.

The only remaining match of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships is the final of the singles main draw. The match – featuring Pacific’s Ran Amar vs. Ryan Torres of UC Davis – will be played on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
