BOULDER — The University of Colorado women’s tennis team will send four athletes to the San Diego Intercollegiate Invitational starting this Thursday and the other four to the Jon Messick Invitational at CSU which begins on Friday.
The four Buffaloes heading to the west coast are Antonia Balzert, Aya El Sayed, Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura. The crew heading to CSU will be Betina Tokac, Carri Hayes, Anya Nelson and Ellen Puzak.
Colorado’s Balzert was also invited to the ITA All-American Championships that begin this weekend in North Carolina but will be heading to the opposite coast with her teammates instead.
The Buffaloes are full of new faces with only half the team returning from last year’s season. One new face, El Sayed, impressed last weekend taking the Battle In The Bay Classic consolation singles championship. The junior transfer won four matches, two over Pac-12 opponents. She and Balzert combined for a 5-3 record in singles with all but one match heading into three sets.
The schedule in San Diego will begin on Thursday with a round of 32 in doubles and two rounds of singles in the 64-woman tournament. Friday will have a pair of doubles rounds and extra matches will begin as the tournament winds down to the final pairings.
At CSU, Friday’s start will feature a pair of doubles rounds and a round of singles, then flip to a round of doubles and two rounds of singles Saturday.
This will be the final weekend of competition for the tennis program before the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas October 12-16.
