UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.— The 61st-ranked Penn State women’s tennis team (10-9, 4-3 B1G) travels to Madison, Wis. and Saint Paul, Minn. this weekend to face the No. 44 Wisconsin Badgers (13-7, 5-2 B1G) on Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. ET and No. 62 Minnesota Golden Gophers (14-8, 2-5 B1G) on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m. ET.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend the Nittany Lions went 2-0 in conference play, taking down Indiana, 5-1, on the road and Illinois at home, 4-3.
Penn State swept Indiana in doubles play with wins from Gabby O’Gorman and Alexandra Nielsen on court No. 3, 6-1. Yvonne Zuffova and Olivia Ryan secured the doubles point on court No. 2 to begin Penn State’s early lead.
The Nittany Lions earned victories from Alexandra Nielsen, O’Gorman, Chekhlystova and Zuffova in singles play to clinch the match for Penn State.
The Fighting Illini put up a tough match against the Nittany Lions on Sunday afternoon.
Penn State captured the doubles point with a 6-0 sweep from duo Gabby O’Gorman and Alexandra Nielsen on court No. 3. Partners Yvonne Zuffova and Olivia Ryan secured the win on court No. 2, 6-3, and the doubles point for the Nittany Lions
Singles play went back and forth between both teams. Penn State controlled courts No. 1, 3 and 6. Gabby O’Gorman defeated Josie Frazier on court No. 3. Court No. 1 brought the match back to a 3-3 tied score with a win from Sofiya Chekhlystova over Kate Doung, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
Match point was left to court No. 6. Alina Lebedeva clinched the match for the Nittany Lions in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
SCOUTING THE BADGERS
The Wisconsin Badgers come into Friday’s match with a 13-7 record and 5-2 record in conference play.
In singles play, Wisconsin holds No. 85- ranked player Ava Markham who posts a 22-10 career record. The team carries partners Xinyu Cai and Alina Mukhortova, holding the No. 61 ranking in doubles play.
Prior to this weekend’s matchup with the Nittany Lions, Wisconsin defeated Minnesota, 4-3. The Badgers will host No.11 Ohio State on Sunday, April 17 following Friday’s match.
