Gibbs Sweeps Costa Rica Tournament

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue women’s tennis incoming freshman Kennedy Gibbs made quite a splash last week at the J3 San Jose in Costa Rica, sweeping the singles and doubles draws.

Gibbs won in straight sets in three of her five singles matches. She opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the first round, before knocking off a player ranked No. 394 in the world over three frames, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Following a 7-5, 6-3 win in the quarterfinals, Gibbs punched her ticket to the finals with a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing. In the championship match, Gibbs outlasted her opponent 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 to claim the title.

In doubles, Gibbs and her partner cruised through the field, allowing an opponent to win three games in a set just once out of eight contested frames. Gibbs and her playing partner faced a trio of players in the top 600 of the ITF World Junior rankings on their way to the title.

Gibbs is up to No. 523 in the ITF World Junior Rankings after starting 2022 with a 7-3 record. She has been ranked as high as No. 26 in the nation by Tennis Recruiting Network and is currently a five-star recruit at No. 35 in the United States.

Gibbs will join a stacked incoming class for the Boilermakers next season that includes TRN No. 34 Antonia Pareja, Ashley Wilson and N.C. State graduate transfer Liz Norman.
