ANNAPOLIS, Md.–Penn State Men’s Tennis put up more solid play against their opponents on Day 2 of the ITA Regionals. Five Nittany Lions advanced to the round of 16 in singles play and will continue on in the tournament at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The Men’s Open Doubles competition began today.
Singles
Facing off against Villanova’s Joshua Robinson, Miko Eala easily took his match 6-3, 6-1.
Bora Sengul also found success against this own opponent, Navy’s Finn Garner. Besting him in three, Sengul won 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(1).
In the round of 32, Charl Morgan played Luis Molina of the University of Delaware. Morgan defeated him 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-1.
Malik Bhatnagar prevailed over former Nittany Lion, current Saint Joeseph University Hawk Alp Sentay 7-5, 6-1.
Chikaya Sato felled Kaipo Marshall of Duquesne in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
Harrison Janes, Sam Bossem, and Loren Byers were all defeated by their respective opponents in the round of 32.
Doubles
Winning their first match against Navy’s Eric Liu and Andres Ballesteros, 8-2 ,the duo of Byers and Bossem went on to face Matthew Jones and Josh Robinson of Villanova. Besting them 8-2, the Nittany Lions will be moving on in doubles comepition.
Bhatnagar/Sengul, Paduraru/Karman, and Eala/Morgan were all granted byes to start their doubles tournament play.
Bhatnagar and Sengul took on Anthony Prokurat and Justin Suarez of Villanova, defeating the duo 8-3.
The pair of Paduraru and Karman were felled by Sentay and Nickolas Frisk of Saint Joseph’s, 8-7(4) in the round of 32.
Eala and Morgan got off to a hot start against the Villanova pair of Alex Kim and Ryan Nguyen. The defeated the Wildcats 8-1.
Falling to another duo from Villanova, Sato and Janes were knocked out of doubles play in the round of the round of 64, 8-7(4).
The Nittany Lions will continue tournament play in Annapolis, Maryland at the ITA Regionals tomorrow.
