CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference had four doubles teams and two singles players advance to the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Individual Singles and Doubles Championships this week, November 19-24, at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The quarterfinals of both the singles and doubles championships are slated for Friday, November 22, with the semifinals on Saturday, November 23, and the championship matches set for Sunday, November 24.
This is the first year of a two-year plan for the singles and doubles championships to be conducted in the fall, with the team championships continuing to be held in the spring.
In singles play, the ACC had two women’s players reach the quarterfinals in Elaine Chervinsky of Virginia and No. 5 seed Valerie Glozman of Stanford.
Virginia’s Chervinsky opened the singles championship with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Emilija Tverijonaite of Arizona State in the Round of 64 and then followed up with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Alexis Blokhina of Stanford in the Round of 32. On Thursday, November 21, Chervinsky controlled the match from the onset in a 6-3, 6-0 win over the No. 1 seed Mary Stoiana of Texas A&M to move on to the quarterfinals on Friday.
Stanford’s Glozman dominated with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the Round of 64 over Zden Safarova of Boise State, before overcoming a second-set loss to defeat Lily Jones of Michigan 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (2) in a third-set tiebreaker to advance to the Round of 16. In her third match in three days, Glozman carded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Theadora Rabman of North Carolina to continue in the NCAA Championship.
In doubles play, half the tournament field is from the ACC with four of the eight doubles pairs in the quarterfinals hailing from Duke, Virginia, North Carolina and NC State.
The team of Irina Balus and Elizabeth Coleman of Duke reached the quarterfinals with two hard-fought wins, including a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 three-set win over Elza Tomase and Catherine Aulia of Tennessee in the Round of 32.
