3 Bears Sweep NCAA Singles Openers

Cal senior Lan Mi earned her first victory in an NCAA individual championship Tuesday in Waco.


WACO, TexasThe California women’s tennis trio of Lan Mi, Katja Wiersholm and Mao Mushika earned a sweep of NCAA Singles Championship first-round matches Tuesday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center. The three Golden Bears advance to the round of 32 on Wednesday, when Mushika and Jessica Alsola also start play in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
 
In the first individual postseason match of her career, Mi, a senior ranked 80th, defeated South Carolina’s Kaitlyn Carnicella 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Wiersholm – who played in NCAA singles last season – followed with her first individual postseason victory. The 33rd-ranked Cal senior was tied with Wichita State’s Xin Tong Wang 4-4 in the first set when the latter retired. Mushika, ranked 107th, also collected her first individual postseason win when she bested Auburn’s 82nd-ranked Angella Okutoyi 6-3, 6-2 in her NCAA singles debut.
 
On Wednesday, Mi plays Ohio State’s 23rd-ranked Luciana Perry at 7 a.m. PT, Wiersholm faces South Carolina’s 10th-ranked Sarah Hamner at 7 a.m. PT and Mushika takes on Stanford’s fourth-ranked Connie Ma at 9 a.m. PT. The 16th-ranked Alsola and Mushika play UCLA’s top-seeded and 15th-ranked Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle at 2:30 p.m. CT in the NCAA doubles opening round of 32.
 
There will be one singles round and one doubles round played each day in Waco from Wednesday through Sunday, the last day of the NCAA individual championships.
