WACO, Texas – Tennessee men’s tennis senior Shunsuke Mitsui secured a singles victory in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships on Tuesday night at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Mitsui earned his way to the round of 32 by defeating Connor van Schalkwyk of Old Dominion 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. He fell to a 0-2 deficit in the third set before winning six of the next eight points to secure the game and the match.
On Wednesday, Mitsui is set to face off against Cesar Bouchelaghem of Washington in the singles round of 32. The time for the match will be announced later tonight.
The senior is the first Vol to make it to at least the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships in two consecutive seasons since VFL Adam Walton accomplished the feat at the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Individual Championships.
Alex Kotzen faced off against No. 72 Aristotelis Thanos of Michigan State in the singles round of 64, where he eventually fell 2-6, 4-6. The New York native posted a 6-3 singles mark for the fall stanza.
The matches will continue to be streamed live for the duration of the tournament on ESPN+ with commentary from Cracked Racquets, and live stats will continue to be available here.
