Duke Opens Individual NCAA Competition

WACO, Texas – Duke men’s tennis opened the 2024-25 NCAA Men’s Tennis NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships Tuesday by splitting singles results. Cooper Williams advanced in straight sets while Pedro Rodenas suffered a setback.

Williams topped Yale’s Vignesh Gogineni 6-3, 6-4. Even at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 in the first set, Williams went on a hold-break-hold run to take it. Gogineni stormed out the gate in the second set with leads of 3-0 and 4-1. Williams then caught fire, winning the final five games to seal the victory.  Williams now faces Texas’ Timo Legout, seeded 9-16, in Wednesday’s Round of 32.

Rodenas dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 8 Aidan Kim of Ohio State. Rodenas was even at 1-1 in the second set before falling behind 3-1. He closed to within a game at 3-2 and 4-3 but could not force a tie.

On Wednesday, Williams and Theo Winegar, seeded 5-8, open the NCAA Doubles Championship against Tanapatt Nirundorn and Henry Jefferson of Florida.
