Stanford Ends Deep Husky Run In Regional Semifinals

BERKELEY, Calif. –  The ITA Northwest Regionals ended in a heartbreaker Monday night at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley.

No. 90 Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher’s doubles semifinals matchup with Stanford’s Connie Ma and Valeria Glozman required two tiebreaks to decide a winner, with the Cardinal ultimately sealing the deal with a 10-8 third set tiebreak.

No. 17 Reece Carter and Alexia Jacobs’ tournament run ended at the same phase just a little quicker, also falling in a third set tiebreak to another Stanford pair (Xu/Blokhina).

Carter’s championship singles run also came to an end at the hands of Stanford, falling in three sets to No. 4 Ma. She will play one more match Tuesday at 10 a.m. for the third and fourth place playoff. The winner will qualify for NCAAs in November.

Stanford’s Ma and Glozman will play against each other in the singles final tomorrow and with each other in the doubles final, facing teammates Xu/Blokhina.

The Dawgs have a few weeks off before heading to San Diego at the beginning of November for the Torero Tennis Classic Nov. 1-3.
