Dores Suffer Regionals Defeat

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis saw its tournament come to a close on Sunday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Purdue.

The Commodores opened the day in the doubles semifinals with No. 86 Henry Ruger and Hugo Coquelin against Middle Tennessee’s No. 53 ranked Karim Al-Amin and Ondrej Horak. After a 6-4 defeat in the first set, the senior Ruger and sophomore Coquelin returned the favor with a 6-4 second to even the match. In the super tiebreaker set, the Blue Raiders held on in the final moments. Al-Amin and Ondrej Horak took the final frame 10-8 to eliminate Ruger and Coquelin from the doubles draw.

In the singles quarterfinals, Ruger matched up once more against Al-Amin. The Commodore was unable to avenge his doubles loss, falling 6-2, 6-4. Coquelin drew No. 10 Shunsuke Mitsui of Tennessee for his quarterfinalas matchup. Mitsui, the top singles seed at the tournament, defeated Coquelin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to advance into Monday.

Vanderbilt returns to action Nov. 1-3 for the Georgia Tech Invite in Atlanta, Georgia before returning to ITA play at the ITA Sectional Championships Nov. 7-10 in Tallahassee, Florida.
