Cal Duo Reaches Quarterfinals At ITA Regionals

Berta Passola Folch advanced in doubles but fell in singles Sunday at ITA regionals.

BERKELEY – The California women’s tennis pair of Berta Passola Folch and Makenna Thiel captured its round of 16 match Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex to advance to Monday’s doubles quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
 
The fifth-seeded Golden Bears defeated Sacramento State’s Madelyn Ferreros and Irene Riva 8-3. Thiel and Passola Folch next face Washington’s top-seeded and 17th-ranked Alexia Jacobs and Reece Carter on Monday at 9 a.m. PT for the right to advance to the semifinal round Monday afternoon.
 
The northwest regional doubles champions advance to the NCAA Doubles Championship in November, with the regional singles finalists qualifying for the NCAA Singles Championship also in November.
 
Attempting to join their teammates in the semifinals, Cal’s sixth-seeded Lan Mi and Sophie Hernandez instead fell to Washington State’s ninth-seeded Chisato Kanemaki and Elyse Tse 8-5 on Sunday at Hellman, while the Bears’ ninth-seeded Tiziana-Marie Schomburg and Naomi Xu lost to WSU’s seventh-seeded Maxine Murphy and Eva Alvarez Sande 8-5 at the Channing Tennis Courts.
 
Two of seven Bears won in Sunday’s singles round of 16 to move onto the quarterfinals later in the day. First, eighth-seeded and 106th-ranked Passola Folch dispatched Olivia Rook of Saint Mary’s 6-3, 6-1, and then ninth-seeded and 107th-ranked Mao Mushika outlasted Stanford’s seventh-seeded and 77th-ranked Valencia Xu 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) in a match that lasted three hours and 13 minutes.
 
But both Bears lost in the next round. Passola Folch fell to Washington’s fourth-seeded and 60th-ranked Carter 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, and then Mushika – playing in the last match of the day at regionals – dropped a 6-3, 6-3 result to Stanford’s top-seeded and fourth-ranked Connie Ma.
