BEREKELEY, Calif. (Oct. 11, 2024) – Washington State freshman Martina Puvill captured her second round singles match to advance to the main draw during Friday’s qualifying round at the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Region Championship at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
After winning her first-round match via walkover due to injury, Puvill was dominating in her second-round match against Oregon’s Tilde Jagare, the No. 9 seed. The freshman from Sant Just Desvern, Spain, jumped out quick and never looked back en route to a 6-1, 6-3 win, advancing to Saturday’s main draw.
WSU freshman Madhu Satishbabu captured her first-round match in the qualifying draw, posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zoe Pradel of Eastern Washington. In her next match, Satishbabu fell to the No. 4 seed, Catherine Gagnon of Washington, 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Martina Markov dropped her first-round match, falling 6-2, 6-4 to San Jose State’s Duru Durgun.
Washington State was victorious in both main draw doubles matches played, as Puvill and Satishbabu recorded an 8-1 win over Eastern Washington’s Pradel and Sara Vasic. The Cougar duo of Hania Abouelsaad and Markov defeated Portland State’s Ayra Salim and Elizabeth Strongina, 8-3.
Play continues Saturday at the ITA NW Championships, with main draw singles and doubles action, as well as consolation play.
