CARY, N.C. – Four Blue Devils advanced to the singles main draw round of 16 while all five doubles teams advanced as the Duke men’s tennis team continued action at the 2024 ITA Carolina Regional in Cary, N.C.
How it Happened
Singles
- Top-seeded Cooper Williams, [2] Pedro Rodenas, Saahith Jayaraman and Connor Krug all secured two matches in the main draw to advance to the round of 16.
- Williams defeated David Mamalat (Presbyterian) 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 64 before securing a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Matias Iturbe (UNC Charlotte) in the round of 32.
- Second-seeded Rodenas played to a 6-3, 6-3 win over UNC Wilmington’s Lukas Steffen before capturing a 6-4, 6-1 tally against North Carolina’s Constantinos Djakouris.
- Freshman Jayaraman defeated Mikalai Bankou (South Carolina) 6-4, 7-6 (4). He then went on to outlast and upset 15th-seeded Jelani Sarr (South Carolina) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
- Connor Krug earned a 6-4, 6-1 tally against fifth-seeded Fons Van Sambeek (NC State) and went on to take down Tymofy Khrystyuk (UNC Greensboro) 7-5, 6-4.
- Duke’s Alexander Visser upset sixth-seeded Casey Hoole (South Carolina) 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 64.
Doubles
- All five doubles tandems advanced to the round of 32.
- Third-seeded Rodenas/Planelles Ripoll defeated Presbyterian’s Daksh Prasad/Evgenios Vasilakis, 8-4.
- 11th-seeded Sam Landau/Theo Winegar defeated Tymofy Khrystyuk/Luke Thomson (UNC Greensboro, 8-6.
- Connor Krug/Jake Krug secured an 8-5 win over Cole Burnam/Connor Laymon of Furman.
- Remy Dugardin/Teddy Truwit captured an 8-2 victory against Sai Gandepalli/Olle Sonesson Lidholt (UNC Asheville).
- Oscar Brown/Jayaraman earned a walkover against their UNC Wilmington opponents.
