Smith & Friend Fall in Singles Play, to Continue on in Consolation Draw


TULSA, Okla. – Arizona’s Jay Friend and Colton Smith fell today in the singles round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships and are set to enter the consolation draw for the remainder of the weekend.

No. 15 Friend [9-16] was matched up against No. 37 Pedro Vives of TCU this morning. Friend fell 1-6, 4-6 to Vives, who is a member of the team who won the 2024 NCAA National Championship title in May. Friend is scheduled to play No. 10 Shunsuke Mitsui [9-16] of Tennessee in the consolation round of 16 on Saturday. 

No. 5 Colton Smith [5] was matched up against No. 30 Sebastian Gorzny of Texas. After winning his first set 6-3, Smith fell to Gorzny 3-6, 3-6. Gorzny, now with Texas, was also a member of the team who won last year’s national championship. Smith will go on to play Matthew Forbes of Michigan State in the consolation round of 16.
