Sun Devil Women’s Tennis adds Aiya Nupbay to Roster

TEMPESun Devil Women’s Tennis announced the signing Aiya Nupbay to the team’s 2024-25 roster Monday morning. It’s the second signing for head coach Jamea Jackson this summer joining Karsyn Evans. Nupbay has competed at the junior level representing Kazakhstan.

“I’m excited to be able to pursue my tennis career with people who have been through the ups and downs of tennis. Being able to share the court with people that have ambitions and similar goals as me is incredible and I can’t wait to learn and grow in all aspects of my journey at ASU.” said Aiya Nupbay.

The incoming freshman is ranked 125th at the ITF junior level and reached a career-high junior ranking of 121 on June 24, 2024. She boasts an all-time junior record of 72-70 in singles since 2019 and has won one junior title at the J4 Karaganda in 2022, winning four straight 3-set matches. At the end of 2023, she had a year-end combined (Singles and Doubles) ranking of 103.

In doubles’ Nupbay has a career record of 112-54, winning 67% of her matches in her junior career. Recently on June 22, she won the J200 Almaty with her partner Kamonwan Yodpetch for Nupbay’s first of three doubles titles on clay this year.

In total, Nupbay has won 14 junior doubles titles, the most coming in 2022 where she won seven doubles titles in a single calendar year, all coming with partner Asylzhan Arystanbekova. In 2022 she went 42-8, winning 84% of her doubles matches and going 17-2 on clay. This calendar year, she currently has a doubles record of 17-7.

Her record on hard courts as a singles player is 36-34 throughout her junior career and rose more than 300 spots in the ITF rankings from 2021-2023, emerging in the top 125. Currently, she has a WTN (World Tennis Number) of 19.7.

When speaking about what gravitated her toward ASU, Nupbay exclaimed the uniqueness of the program and how it builds a strong foundation for the future to continue playing tennis.

“It’s important for me to be surrounded by people who are as passionate about tennis as me. Jamea (Jackson) is someone I admire a lot and have a lot of respect for. From my experience she is one that will help me overcome my barriers and become the best that I can be.” said Nupbay.

In October 2023, she competed in the J300 Wanju, the Asia and Oceana Regional Championships, reaching the quarterfinals in singles.
