BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Part of the Purdue women’s tennis team spent the weekend down in Blomington for the Hoosier Classic, hosted by Indiana. A quintet of Boilermakers made their season debut, including the collegiate debuts for Ashlie Wilson, Antonia Pareja and Emma Jane Barclay.
Over three days, the Boilermakers squared off in a round-robin event against competitors from Indiana, Xavier, Northern Kentucky, Louisville and Middle Tennessee State.
Highlights from the weekend included a pair of doubles victories for junior Rut Galindo. The Guatemala international paired up with rookie Ashlie Wilson to win 6-3 on Friday against Muskan Gupta and Lilly-Sophie Schmidt from Middle Tennessee State. Galindo then won 6-4 when partnered with freshman Antonia Pareja when they faced Mariajose Hernandez and Laura Grau from Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
In singles, the Boilermakers picked up six wins in their first event of the season.
Juana Larranaga had a set lead over Tatiana Simova from Louisville when the latter retired. Galindo outlasted the Cardinals Cici Xiu, taking the contest 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
Emma Jane Barclay picked up the first of her two wins on the weekend with a 7-6(4), 6-2 tally over Cara Szilasi from Middle Tennessee State. The rookie added another win on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-2 display against Grau from Northern Kentucky.
Galindo and Larranaga closed the weekend strong with singles wins Sunday. Galindo needed three sets to beat Xavier’s Kat Lyman, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. Likewise, Larranaga outlasted Lauren Lemonds from Indiana over three sets, 6-7(3), 6-1, 7-5.
