3 Bears Reach Singles Semifinals At SMC Fall Invite

Makenna Thiel plays her doubles partner Sunday for the right to advance to the top-flight singles final at Saint Mary’s.

MORAGA – Three members of the California women’s tennis team advanced to the top-flight singles semifinals of the Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational with wins Saturday at the Korth Tennis Complex. Makenna Thiel will face Golden Bear teammate Berta Passola Folch in one Sunday semifinal, while Cal’s Lan Mi will take on San Francisco’s Katerina Filip in the other semifinal.
 
In the Blue singles quarterfinals, the top-seeded Passola Folch defeated San Francisco’s Hana Gramracy, 6-4, 6-2, the second-seeded Mi beat San Jose State’s Irena Muradyan, 6-0, 6-4, and the sixth-seeded Thiel bested Sacramento State’s Mayya Gorbunova, 6-2, 6-3. An all-Bears semifinal round was thwarted when Cal’s Tiziana-Marie Schomburg fell to the Dons’ Filip, 6-1, 6-2.
 
In the top-flight – or Blue – doubles quarterfinals, the Cal duo of Mi and Schomburg narrowly lost to the UC Davis pair of Daisy and Olive Maunupau, 7-5.
 
Passola Folch and Thiel teamed up in the Blue doubles consolation bracket, winning twice – including a 6-2 semifinal victory over USF’s Filip and Gramracy – to reach Sunday’s final.
 
The Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational ends Sunday.
